Designated as a ‘breakthrough therapy’ by the FDA, ketamine is an FDA-approved anesthetic that can rapidly—often within an hour or two—lift the symptoms of anxiety, major depressive disorder, PTSD and other conditions. After a short series of repeated doses, this effect typically extends out for weeks to months.

How Ketamine Therapy Works

Better outcomes than traditional treatments
Antidepressants have worked to treat depression for many people since the 1980s, but they don’t work for everyone. Ketamine’s response rate is more than double that of traditional antidepressants and ketamine works rapidly, in hours to days, compared to antidepressants which take weeks to exert their full effects.

Professional guidance from medical experts
Our no-pressure psychiatrists can help you decide whether ketamine therapy might help you feel better, faster. Then, we partner with you every step of the way to derive meaning from your ketamine therapy experience, so you can translate that awareness into tangible everyday life practices.

Symptom relief and improved brain functioning
In patients treated with ketamine, researchers have observed increased synaptic connections and brain cell growth. This neuronal growth and connectivity improve mood and cognition. This means you can disengage from routine thought patterns, heal unhealthy neural pathways and achieve clarity.

Is ketamine therapy right for you?

You may be feeling lonely, disconnected, or lost – all of which can be signs of depression or past trauma. No matter what you are going through, we believe in your ability to heal.

During each ketamine therapy session, you recline in a private treatment room with aromatherapy, and experience deep relaxation. Most patients choose to wear an eye mask and listen to a playlist, curated specifically to their unique intention.

Each IV ketamine sessions lasts about 40 minutes, after which patients should have someone available to accompany them home safely. Ketamine is delivered at a slow and controlled dose and a registered nurse is present for the duration of the infusion. Typically, patients receive a course of 6-12 ketamine infusions over 2-4 weeks. The frequency and number of sessions are individualized.

Most patients experience positive results from ketamine after their first infusion. Subsequent infusions help prolong the positive effects.

Transform your perspective with compassionate care

For most of our patients, ketamine has transformative effects on their worldview. Ketamine produces a sense of disconnection from one’s ordinary reality and usual self that may induce or enhance feelings of creativity, purpose, perspective, serenity, insight, inspiration, gratitude, empathy, connection with others and the world, openness to new ideas, psychological rebirth, and traveling outside of one’s self, among others.

Following treatment, you may experience beneficial shifts in awareness or perspective, identify more strongly with positive self-images and values, and describe a newfound sense of meaning or purpose. IV ketamine therapy has also been found to increase compassion, reduce fear of death, and increase joy in living.

Heal difficult to treat symptoms with neuroscience

Some people with depression and other mental health conditions are able to achieve symptom remission with oral medication. However, traditional antidepressant medications are not effective and tolerable for everyone. Not to mention, lingering symptoms can interfere with the comfort and effectiveness of talk therapy.

Ketamine works differently to quickly relieve your toughest symptoms. As an NMDA receptor antagonist that stimulates brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), ketamine activates the limbic system (associated with memory, emotion, and behavior) and strengthens the interaction between the conscious and subconscious levels of the mind.

  • Why choose ketamine therapy?

For many years, the initial response to mental health treatment has been psychiatric medications and therapy. Although these conventional treatments can be effective, they don’t work for everyone and medications can take weeks or months to exert their full effects. If you’re experiencing symptoms, unwanted side effects, or if you want to supplement your current treatments, you might consider ketamine therapy.

One of the most promising features of ketamine—and one that sets it apart from traditional antidepressants—is its extremely rapid onset. Symptoms tend to improve within just 4-72 hours after the first infusion compared to the 6–12 week onset period of conventional medications. For most patients, ketamine also has transformative effects on an individual’s worldview.

Following treatment, patients report beneficial shifts in awareness or perspective and identify more strongly with positive self-images and values and often describe a newfound sense of meaning or purpose. IV ketamine therapy has also been found to increase compassion, reduce fear of death, and increase joy in living.

  • How does ketamine therapy work?

In the cerebral cortex alone, the most highly developed part of the brain, there are somewhere between 14 and 16 billion neurons. Neurons communicate with each other via neurotransmitters: chemicals that act as messengers between neurons.

Different neurotransmitters affect neurons in different ways. Glutamate is the most common excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It plays a particularly important role in neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to form new synapses and neural connections over a lifetime), learning, and forming memories.

Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist that interacts with glutamate. Research shows ketamine increases the expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). This results in enhanced neuroplasticity, or the ability of brain cells to form new connections with one another. In patients treated with ketamine therapy, researchers have observed increased neuronal growth and connectivity in as little as one hour after treatment that improves mood, cognition and the ability to disengage from routine thought patterns, heal unhealthy neural pathways and achieve clarity.

  • What to expect during ketamine treatment?

Wear comfortable clothing. Feel free to bring any personal items you want to have with you during the infusion. For example, some individuals like bringing a photograph or painting, sentimental trinket or memorabilia, or religious item. Each ketamine infusion lasts approximately 40 minutes (1.5 hour total appointment time) and the dosage is based on your weight.  It’s important to understand that the dose is therapeutic, with the goal being a mild dissociative experience.

During the infusion, patients experience deep relaxation and typically wear an eye mask in a dimly lit room with aromatherapy. An IV is inserted into the arm, wrist, or hand, and ketamine is delivered at a slow and controlled rate with a registered nurse present for the duration of the infusion. Blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation are monitored. Typically, patients receive a course of 6-12 ketamine infusions over 2-4 weeks.

For comfort, verbal grounding, or physical support such as handholding or a shoulder touch may be offered. Physical space and patient boundaries will always be respected. Please let us know if you would not be comfortable with these forms of support. After your infusion, please take some time to honor your experience. Journal. Spend time in nature. Meditate. Draw. Please drink plenty of water.

  • Will insurance cover IV ketamine therapy?

Although IV ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic, it is used off-label to treat mood and chronic pain disorders. At the present time, ketamine infusions for mood and chronic pain disorders are cash pay procedures.

We recognize that there are financial considerations to take into account when starting any treatment. Our team is always available to discuss and answer any questions you may have about your payment options.

  • How should I prepare for IV ketamine treatment?

Please arrive 5-10 mins prior to your schedule infusion time to use the restroom. Please note the following day of treatment guidelines:

    • We recommend no large meals 4-6 hours prior to your infusion.
    • Wear comfortable clothing and sensible shoes that you can take off.
    • The infusion will be into your arm so choose clothing that makes this possible.
    • If you are planning to play your own music, try to download the music to your device rather than use the cloud.
    • Remember your headphones and make sure they are charged.
    • Plan to put your phone on airplane mode for approximately 2-hours.
    • Bring a snack or protein shake for afterward.
    • Schedule a period or rest afterward for reflection and journaling.

You will need a designated driver to bring you home after your appointment. Your driver can remain in the waiting room during your infusion, and they may join you in the recovery area if you desire at the end of your infusion. We have free internet in the waiting room.

  • What if IV ketamine therapy isn’t right for me?

That’s okay! Our no-pressure clinicians can help you decide if IV ketamine therapy is right for you. If it isn’t, Neuro Wellness Spa also offers TMS therapy, which is a non-drug, non-sedating FDA-cleared treatment for depression, and Spravato esketamine nasal spray. You can learn more about TMS and Spravato by asking your psychiatrist.

  • Can I make my own playlist for the infusion?

Yes! Music can be an important component of ketamine treatment and amplify the experience. We provide an ambient musical selection that our patients have found very therapeutic, however if you would like to pick your own music, we recommend instrumental and ambient-type music.

    • Consider as a starting point the songs that give you chills.
    • 2-5 minutes is about the right length for each piece. This will allow you to move through a number of spaces.
    • Collect 60 minutes of music and place the most important music around 10-35 minutes. Start gently.
    • Fast melodies and chord changes, and discordant musical genres (e.g., some forms of Jazz) are often best avoided.
    • Slower, high quality recordings of stringed instruments are generally appreciated.
    • Transcendent female voices—ones with heartfelt power in their tone—can be powerfully reassuring and draw participants upwards. This can be useful if themes of attachment, safety, trauma, mothering/parenting are present. Look towards music that communicates that: You are good. You are human. You are loved.
    • Electronica works well, but it is best if there is a warmth to it. Higher frequencies can push toward transcendence.
    • A song might be meaningful based on your history, yet still not be appropriate. Perhaps it is a “favorite,” more because it reminds of a period of youthful freedom and friendship, rather than its higher-level meaning. Occasionally people laugh (good-naturedly) at themselves in the treatment as they skip past a song of this sort.
    • Regarding the meaning in the music you choose, themes surrounding emotional pain are acceptable and even desirable. Sadness, poignancy and longing can be an appropriate and authentic response to the pain we experience in life. These themes can be powerful within this treatment experience. However, sometimes songs express this aspect of humanity in forms of anger, irritability and petulance; definitely avoid these pieces.
    • It is best to download your soundtrack directly to your device rather than rely upon the cloud given network issues.
    • Plan to use the highest quality headphones you have access to including “over ear” styles.
  • If I get ketamine therapy, can I stop taking medications?

If you’re currently taking medications that are well tolerated and effective, continuing current medications can help sustain your ketamine response. Patients who are experiencing many side effects, however, sometimes elect to taper medications in collaboration with their psychiatrist.
