3 Minute Express TMS Treatment in Southern California

Many people suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and/or Anxiety Disorders. All too often, these people get caught in a cycle of trying to find a medication that works for them. But now, one treatment method is bringing back hope—and it doesn’t require medication.

It is frustrating for patients to see no results after waiting weeks for the medicine to take effect in their system. Even worse than no results are negative side effects. This medication cycle can make it seem as though there is no end in sight for chronic sadness, fatigue, or anxiety.

The truth is, antidepressants do not work for everyone. Luckily, there is an alternative: intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation (iTBS).

iTBS is an “express” treatment because it only takes 5 minutes a day for 30 days to complete. It is quickly gaining traction as an effective alternative to anti-depressants. Neuro Wellness Spa is a proud provider of express TMS. Contact us today to learn more about this alternative opportunity.

WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

What Is 3-Minute Express TMS?

Traditional Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a medical treatment that stimulates the brain. TMS has been utilized for over 10 years to treat symptoms of depression in patients. Often, these patients have not responded positively to medications.

The FDA recently approved a new type of TMS: intermittent Theta-Burst Stimulation. This treatment is also called Express or 3-minute TMS. Traditional TMS waves occur at a regular, repetitive frequency. Theta-burst waves are distributed to the brain in patterned clusters of waves. The waves target the part of the brain responsible for mood regulation. They activate neurotransmitters and imitate typical brain function. These are fast acting, so sessions are quick.

How Does it Work?

Before treatment, we ask patients to remove any magnet-sensitive objects. This is to prevent interference with magnetic pulses. Patients will sit comfortably with a coil placed above their head. The coil will transmit magnetic pulses to the front region of the brain. During this time, the patient will hear a clicking sound (similar to an MRI). They may feel a tapping under the coil.

Most patients find the treatment easy to tolerate. The procedure does not involve sedatives, anesthetic, or hospital stays. Instead, the procedure is entirely non-invasive.

In total, the entire process only takes three minutes a day for an average of four to six weeks.

If you are ready to try a new method to treat depression, contact us today. Neuro Wellness Spa can help you take that next step in recovery with Express TMS.

What Makes Theta Burst TMS Different?

Faster

Express TMS is gaining traction because it is a faster form of treatment compared to medication. One Theta-Burst Stimulation treatment only takes three minutes to complete. Traditional TMS takes around 20-45 minutes.

Both procedures are equally effective and require 30 treatments on average. Theta-Burst Stimulation drastically cuts down on a patient’s total amount of time in the office. This faster time also leads to a reduced cost.

Low Risk of Side Effects

Antidepressants cause a string of side effects including:

● Weight gain
● Lowered libido
● Fatigue
● Insomnia

Patients find themselves not sticking with medications because the adverse symptoms are too severe. Express TMS is a non-invasive procedure with a low risk of side effects. Anesthesia or sedatives are not necessary for this treatment.

The most common side effect is a headache immediately following treatment. Taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen 30 minutes before the procedure can easily reduce the risk of a headache. Other possible side effects are lightheadedness and discomfort around the simulation site.

It is important to note that Theta-Burst Stimulation treatment should not be confused with ECT, electroconvulsive therapy. ECT has side effects of confusion, memory loss, and possible side effects associated with anesthesia. TMS does not present these risks.

Great Success Rates

Express TMS has shown great success rates. For many patients, it helps to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety. Treatments are also safe to repeat as needed. Due to its proven efficacy, more insurance plans are starting to cover Express TMS.

Every person responds to treatment differently. As such, it is important to remember that the rate at which patients report relief of symptoms varies. Some patients report a noticeable change within the first week of treatment. Others do not notice a difference until after the fourth week. At Neuro Wellness Spa, we’ll consult with you to measure your progress and change.

The improvement in symptoms is long-lasting. Patients do not require any daily upkeep after the initial treatment. To schedule a consultation for Express TMS, contact us online or by phone.

Does 3-Minute Express TMS Work?

3-minute TMS has been shown to change the neuron activity in the prefrontal cortex. This is the part of the brain responsible for mood regulation. In patients with depression, this area is commonly dormant. With TMS, magnetic pulses activate this area of the brain.

In a 2005 study, patients who received TMS therapy reported higher success rates than the control group who were given a placebo.

Neuro Wellness Spa is excited to offer an alternative for people who have not responded to other forms of treatment. We are happy to answer any questions regarding the efficacy of Express TMS – contact us today.

Who Is 3-Minute Express TMS for?

TMS is recommended for people with Major Depressive Disorder. Patients who seek TMS often have tried multiple antidepressants for the proper time period and dosage. These treatments have not produced results. For that reason, TMS may be a more successful alternative. People suffering from anxiety disorders also report a decrease in symptoms after treatment.

Are you suffering from depression? Has your depression not responded to other treatment options? If so, consult with your doctor to see if TMS may be a viable option for you. Our team at Neuro Wellness Spa would be happy to set up a consultation.

Who Shouldn’t Consider 3-Minute Express TMS?

Patients with non-removable metal devices or implants in or around the head are not eligible for Express TMS. Braces and metal fillings are not included as metal devices.

Patients with the following conditions should consult with their doctor before seeking TMS treatment:

● Seizures
● Frequent/intense headaches
● Co-occurring mental disorders
● Taking medications

This treatment is not usually considered for patients who have not yet tried medication for depression. Our experts at Neuro Wellness Spa will work closely with you to find out if 3-minute TMS is right for you.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
