Anxiety TMS Treatment in Southern California

TMS, or Transcranial magnetic stimulation, is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate brain cells involved in mood control and depression. TMS is indicated and FDA-cleared for the treatment of depression in those who have not experienced satisfactory relief or have not tolerated at least 1 antidepressant. Since its FDA clearance in 2008 for depression and 2018 for OCD, numerous studies have suggested TMS may also be a promising treatment for a broad range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders.

Neuro Wellness Spa recognizes the benefits that TMS offers. We are here to help.

It is not uncommon for people with anxiety to also have depression. To learn more about TMS, or to schedule a consultation with our Medical Director, contact us at 1-877-847-3984 today.

WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

At our office, we show you exactly how the process works before your first session. When you make an appointment, you’ll see in person how TMS looks, and feels.

How is Anxiety Treated with TMS?

A typical TMS treatment course consists of:

  • 36 treatment sessions over a 3-month period
  • Each session lasts 20-30 minutes
  • Typically, a treatment protocol involves 5 treatments per week for 6 weeks followed by 2 treatments per week for 3 weeks

During treatment sessions, patients relax in a treatment chair and a TMS magnet is placed over the patient’s scalp. The magnet delivers pulses to specific areas of the brain. These pulses feel like taps on the head.

The magnetic pulses inhibit areas of the brain with overactive levels of activity. As a result, TMS regulates emotions and lessens the severity of anxiety symptoms.

Is TMS Effective for Anxiety?

Even though it was originally used to treat depression, TMS has been investigated and shown to be effective in treating anxiety. Anxiety negatively impacts certain regions of the brain in which it causes abnormal levels of activity. The magnetic pulses used in TMS target these overactive areas to reduce the symptoms of anxiety.

How Long Does it Take for TMS to Start Working?

Most patients experience notable improvement with TMS by session 8, 9 or 10 (about two weeks after starting treatment) as opposed to medications which may take 4-6 weeks to relieve symptoms.

Can TMS Increase Anxiety?

Typically, there are no side effects of TMS treatment. Mild scalp discomfort during active treatment is the most common side effect. Other infrequent but known side effects may include:

  • Mild Headache
  • Fatigue

How Successful is TMS?

Several studies investigating TMS in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) have reported its effectiveness.

One study published on TMS and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) found 60% of patients noticed an improvement in their symptoms as measured by the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS).

Other studies of TMS for anxiety have suggested that TMS is most successful in the treatment of GAD when combined with anti-anxiety medications.

TMS should not be used in patients who have:

  • Implanted magnetic devices, such as aneurysm clips or cochlear implants. Dental fillings and piercings are not magnetic devices.

Why Use TMS to Treat Anxiety?

Conventional psychotherapies and medications may not be effective in some patients with anxiety disorders. TMS may be a safe and effective treatment option for those who have not experienced symptom relief with standard treatments. TMS is minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated.

Neuro Wellness Spa offers many different types of therapies; however, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) has been the cornerstone treatment used for people suffering from depression, anxiety, and other treatable mental disorders at our office since 2009.

Is TMS Effective for Anxiety?

Even though it was originally used to treat depression, TMS has gained a reputation for its effectiveness in treating anxiety. Anxiety negatively impacts regions of the brain. It causes abnormal levels of inactivity in some areas. The magnetic signals used in TMS stimulate these areas. Patients’ feelings of fear and nervousness are often reduced through this stimulation.

How Long Does it Take for TMS to Start Working?

Patients usually don’t notice improvements after one treatment. It takes several weeks of TMS to notice an improvement in symptoms. With enough consistent treatment, some patients notice their symptoms go away completely.

Can TMS Increase Anxiety?

Though rare, some patients have experienced an increase in anxiety due to TMS treatment. This is commonly due to misconceptions about the treatments and fears held prior to entering the treatment.

Patients should be aware of other possible side effects of TMS. Headaches are the most common side effect. They usually go away after a treatment session is over. If they persist, they are successfully treated with over-the-counter pain medication. Some other side effects to be aware of are:

  • Light-headedness
  • Spasms of facial muscles
  • Scalp discomfort where the coil is placed

Some more serious side effects, though incredibly rare, include:

  • Mania (in people with bipolar disorder)
  • Seizures

How Successful is TMS?

TMS has proven to be successful for a majority of patients seeking the treatment.

A study published on TMS and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) found 60% of patients noticed an improvement in their symptoms. These results were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS).

Some studies suggest that TMS is more successful when combined with anti-anxiety medications.

TMS should not be used in patients who have:

  • A history of seizures
  • Implanted devices, like aneurysm clips or cochlear implants
  • Brain damage
  • Frequent headaches

Patients with these conditions won’t benefit from TMS treatment. Their conditions can potentially be made worse with this course of treatment. Always talk to a doctor before beginning TMS treatment. With any questions about our treatment, contact us.

Why Use TMS to Treat Anxiety?

A lot of patients don’t experience results with certain therapies like psychotherapies. Medications may not be effective in some patients. Repetitive TMS treatments are proven to be effective for patients who don’t experience success with these standard treatments. They are a great drug-free option for patients. TMS is also minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
