Anxiety TMS Treatment in Southern California

TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, was originally used to help patients with depression. TMS is still a relatively new treatment option. It received FDA approval for depression treatment in 2008. Since then, it has undergone numerous clinical studies. This has resulted in its use for treating a broad range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders.

Neuro Wellness Spa recognizes the benefits that TMS offers. One of these is anxiety relief for our patients. With TMS therapy, our goal is to diminish the severity of a patient’s symptoms.

WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

At our office, we show you exactly how the process works before your first session. When you make an appointment, you’ll see in person how TMS looks, and feels.

How is Anxiety Treated with TMS?

A typical TMS treatment occurs as follows:

1. An electromagnetic coil is placed on the scalp.

2. One of our trained specialists determines how much magnetic energy is needed.

3. We begin treatment at this point. The coil is turned on and sends a magnetic signal to nerve cells in the brain. The transmission of this signal is painless.

The signal stimulates areas of the brain with lower levels of activity. The signal also repairs decreased connectivity between the brain’s limbic and frontal regions. This increases the brain’s functionality. As a result, TMS works to improve the regulation of emotions and diminish the severity of a patient’s anxiety symptoms.

TMS may seem intimidating to those who are unfamiliar with it. Some notable points about the TMS treatment process:

  • Each treatment lasts for about 40 minutes.
  • Multiple treatments are performed over a determined period of time.
  • Patients remain fully conscious during each treatment. They can relax, watch TV, or listen to music throughout the treatment.

Throughout treatment, your loved one is closely monitored. Based on their symptoms, a trained specialist makes any necessary changes to the energy being distributed throughout the process.

Anxiety Statistic

If you suffer from anxiety, you are not alone:

  • More than 18% of the adult population in the United States suffers from anxiety.
  • Women are twice as likely to suffer from anxiety as men.
  • Less than 40% of people suffering from these disorders seek treatment.
  • Children are also affected. One-quarter of children aged 13 to 18 suffer from a form of this disorder.
  • Globally, 1 in 13 people suffer from a form of this disorder.

Signs & Symptoms of Anxiety

It can be difficult to determine if you have an anxiety disorder. People can feel anxiety occasionally due to high-stress situations, like public speaking. Temporary feelings of fear or worry tend to go away.

As opposed to occasional feelings of nervousness, anxiety disorders:

  • Involve lingering and worsening anxiety
  • Often co-occur with depression or other mental disorders
  • Negatively impact daily life

Anxiety can affect you physically. It also impacts your cognition and behavior. Some possible signs and symptoms of anxiety are:

  • Tiring easily
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Issues with falling or staying asleep
  • Tense muscles
  • Difficulty with concentrating
  • Increased heart rate
  • Shakiness or trembling
  • Sweating
  • Nausea

You may have a form of this disorder if you exhibit a combination of these symptoms. It’s especially likely if these symptoms persist for several weeks or months.

These symptoms alone don’t guarantee you have a form of anxiety. A doctor can determine an official diagnosis.

Recognize that anxiety disorders are a group of mental disorders with many variations. Become familiar with the specific forms that anxiety can take. This may help you pinpoint specific symptoms. There are many different forms, some of which include:

  • Panic disorder
  • Specific phobias, like claustrophobia or aerophobia
  • Selective mutism

Is TMS Effective for Anxiety?

Even though it was originally used to treat depression, TMS has gained a reputation for its effectiveness in treating anxiety. Anxiety negatively impacts regions of the brain. It causes abnormal levels of inactivity in some areas. The magnetic signals used in TMS stimulate these areas. Patients’ feelings of fear and nervousness are often reduced through this stimulation.

How Long Does it Take for TMS to Start Working?

Patients usually don’t notice improvements after one treatment. It takes several weeks of TMS to notice an improvement in symptoms. With enough consistent treatment, some patients notice their symptoms go away completely.

Can TMS Increase Anxiety?

Though rare, some patients have experienced an increase in anxiety due to TMS treatment. This is commonly due to misconceptions about the treatments and fears held prior to entering the treatment.

Patients should be aware of other possible side effects of TMS. Headaches are the most common side effect. They usually go away after a treatment session is over. If they persist, they are successfully treated with over-the-counter pain medication. Some other side effects to be aware of are:

  • Light-headedness
  • Spasms of facial muscles
  • Scalp discomfort where the coil is placed

Some more serious side effects, though incredibly rare, include:

  • Mania (in people with bipolar disorder)
  • Seizures

How Successful is TMS?

TMS has proven to be successful for a majority of patients seeking the treatment.

A study published on TMS and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) found 60% of patients noticed an improvement in their symptoms. These results were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS).

Some studies suggest that TMS is more successful when combined with anti-anxiety medications.

TMS should not be used in patients who have:

  • A history of seizures
  • Implanted devices, like aneurysm clips or cochlear implants
  • Brain damage
  • Frequent headaches

Patients with these conditions won’t benefit from TMS treatment. Their conditions can potentially be made worse with this course of treatment. Always talk to a doctor before beginning TMS treatment. With any questions about our treatment, contact us.

Why Use TMS to Treat Anxiety?

A lot of patients don’t experience results with certain therapies like psychotherapies. Medications may not be effective in some patients. Repetitive TMS treatments are proven to be effective for patients who don’t experience success with these standard treatments. They are a great drug-free option for patients. TMS is also minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated.

Neuro Wellness Spa offers many different types of therapies; however, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) has been the cornerstone treatment used for people suffering from depression, anxiety, and other treatable mental disorders at our office since 2009.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
