Cognitive Enhancement TMS Treatment

in Southern California

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to improve your memory even as you age? Or hone your concentration and learning ability?

The brain is incredibly complex. We still don’t fully understand it and how it operates. However, we are starting to learn that it’s possible to improve cognition. One method is involves combining extant neuroimaging technology and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

TMS is a relatively new therapy. This combo works by taking detailed pictures of someone’s brain. From there, we can map out which areas are responsible for different cognitive abilities. With this scan, technicians can stimulate specific areas with magnetic fields and increase cognitive functioning.

TMS has traditionally been used to treat neurological diseases and mental illnesses. At Neuro Wellness Spa, we know it has the potential to enhance healthy brains too. We work by scanning your brain and implementing a customized therapy plan. From there, you may be able to enhance your cognition in ways you never knew possible.

If you’re interested in cognitive enhancement, contact us today to set up an initial consultation.

WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

At our office, we show you exactly how the process works before your first session. When you make an appointment, you’ll see in person how TMS looks, and feels.

How Is the Brain Primed for Cognitive Enhancement?

There’s a concept in neurology called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity deals with the brain’s many abilities, including its capacity to:

  • Learn new information
  • Acquire new skills
  • Change and adapt throughout an entire lifespan

A person’s level of neuroplasticity changes throughout life. However it can also improve even as we age.

Cognitive enhancement is the process of improving neuroplasticity. It enhances abilities like memory, learning, and motor functions. In simple terms, cognitive enhancement is about learning to think and learn better.

Enhancing cognition has huge implications for certain neurological disorders. This includes disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and degeneration from brain injuries. Even for healthy patients, cognitive enhancement can bring benefits to make us feel more alert.

The brain is naturally plastic – which means its primed for change and adaptation. Natural deterioration occurs with age and illness. However, there’s a growing school of thought that it is possible to manually encourage cognitive enhancement. Here at Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a special combination of neuroimaging to map the brain and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy. With these methods, we are able to promote brain activity.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy is FDA-approved. The procedure is generally regarded as safe by medical professionals. New research emerges all the time about how TMS benefits neurological and psychological conditions. These studies attest to the positive effects of TMS on neurological health.

Neuroimaging & TMS – How Does It Work?

During TMS, a trained specialist positions a magnetic coil close to your head. The coil pulses magnetic energy toward certain areas of your brain, providing painless stimulation.

Neuroimaging involves taking pictures of the structures and function of the brain. We can use technology to see what the brain looks like. The scan shows how areas of the brain “light up” in response to different information. This identifies under-stimulated areas of the brain. These areas may be in different locations for every person.

By combining neuroimaging techniques and TMS, we can target the specific areas of your brain responsible for cognition, memory, learning, and so on. This means we can tailor the procedure to fit your unique brain geography and cognitive enhancement goals.

Neuroimaging and TMS procedures are non-invasive. There are no surgeries, pinpricks, or probing required. This procedure is appropriate for anyone in search of cognitive enhancement, even healthy clients. For neuroimaging, we follow the same standard protocols required of every medical facility.

How Successful is TMS for Stimulating Cognitive Enhancement?

Due to scientific research, it’s clear that TMS therapy is a useful tool for promoting cognitive enhancement. It’s not a miracle procedure that will transform you into a genius. However, it’s shown promise in laboratories as a cognitive enhancer.

Right now, studies have proven that TMS can boost neuroplasticity within minutes to hours after a session. Regular stimulation is complemented by a targeted plan developed through neuroimaging. Through this, some clients can enjoy extended benefits long after therapy sessions end.

How Long Does it Take for TMS to Start Working?

The precise treatment duration varies. Factors that influence results include:

  • Client’s psychiatric history
  • Cognitive starting point
  • Enhancement goals

In general, a single session is often not enough to produce significant results. Clients usually attend several sessions per week for a few weeks or months.

You see for yourself by setting up a consultation with Neuro Wellness Spa. We’ll help you determine the right frequency and number of sessions for you. We’re open 7 days a week, so give us a call at any time

What Are the Side ffects of TMS Therapy?

There are very few side effects of TMS therapy. This is part of the reason why it’s so effective as a treatment for various conditions. The most common side effect is a headache and a slight ringing in the ear. Some clients experience these sensations after their first few sessions.

Other side effects may include fainting, seizures, and temporary hearing loss. These are all extremely rare in otherwise healthy patients. We’ll monitor you during the entire procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.

Because it uses magnetic fields, TMS can interfere with electrical implants like pacemakers. If you use a pacemaker or defibrillator, please notify your technician prior to the procedure. Of course, if you have any questions about potential side effects, just ask us!

Neuro Wellness Spa offers many different types of therapies; however, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) has been the cornerstone treatment used for people suffering from depression, anxiety, and other treatable mental disorders at our office since 2009.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
