Depression TMS Treatment in Southern California

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe and effective treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate different areas of the brain. TMS is non-invasive (does not require surgery), non-systemic (does not affect the entire body) and well-tolerated. TMS therapy can be used alone, or in conjunction with other treatment modalities including behavioral therapies and medication.

Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the leading providers of TMS in California. Our Medical Director and Founder, Dr. Martha Koo, M.D., is a pioneer in development and application of TMS therapy. Dr. Koo holds certifications in the applications of Neurostar rTMS, Brainsway Deep TMS and MagVita rTMS therapy. Additionally, she has over 20 years of experience working in private practice psychiatry. Passionate about using TMS and other therapies, Dr. Koo is dedicated to helping her patients with depression.

TMS therapy is available at all three of our California clinics. To learn more about TMS therapy for depression, contact us today at 1-877-847-3984 or use our contact form.

WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of ocd, anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

At our office, we show you exactly how the process works before your first session. When you make an appointment, you’ll see in person how TMS looks, and feels.

How is Depression Treated with TMS?

Although medications and behavioral therapies are treatment options for depression, over 30% of patients still experience depressive symptoms after undergoing these conventional treatments. Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a well-tolerated and highly effective approach to symptom relief for those with depression.

TMS is indicated and FDA-cleared for the treatment of depression. When treating patients with depression, TMS pulses are directed towards specific areas of the brain which have been associated with depressive symptoms. TMS has been shown to change the neuron activity in the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for mood regulation. In patients with depression, the prefrontal cortex is commonly dormant. With TMS, magnetic pulses activate this area of the brain. Approximately 70% of Neuro Wellness Spa TMS patients experience symptom remission.

During TMS treatment, patients recline in a treatment chair and remain awake and alert. A TMS magnet is positioned over the patient’s head to deliver pulses to specific areas of the brain. Patients report that the pulses feel like taps on the scalp. Each treatment session lasts about 30 minutes, after which patients can immediately return back to their daily routines.

TMS is well tolerated. Sometimes patients experience mild scalp discomfort or mild headache during treatment. Most patients experience a positive response to TMS after 2 weeks of treatment (8-10 sessions).

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Depression manifests itself in a variety of different ways. Not everyone will experience the same symptoms or the same intensity. Some people may only exhibit one or two. The most common symptoms are:

  • Feelings of sadness or being “blue”
  • Loss of interest in things once enjoyed
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Sleeping too much
  • Changes in appetite
  • Slowed speech and movements
  • Feeling worthless
  • Feelings of constant guilt

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, and believe you may have depression, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.

What is Depression?

Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in the world. People can experience it at different levels of severity, and it can have a variety of causes. No two people experience depression in the same way.

Major Depressive Disorder, or MDD, is characterized by a period of at least two weeks of depressed mood or the loss of interest in nearly all activities. MDD differs from sadness which is a normal human emotion that may temporarily arise following an unhappy event, but passes with time.

Major Depressive Disorder often occurs in tandem with other mental health disorders such as anxiety, OCD or PTSD. It is more than just “feeling sad” or experiencing normal grief following a traumatic event.

Depression may have multiple causes many causes:

  • Genetics: Depression, like many other mental health disorders, runs in families. People with blood relatives that have had depression are more likely to have it themselves.
  • Biochemistry: Chemical imbalances in the brain have long been thought to contribute to depression and are the target of many medication treatment options.
  • Environment: Exposure to hormones triggered by very stressful situations like violence, abuse, neglect, and poverty are thought to contribute to depression.

Depression Statistics

Depression is an extremely common mental illness. In fact, studies have shown that 1 in 6 people will be diagnosed with depression in their lifetime.

Depression is most common among women; 1 in 3 women will have a major depression episode at least once in their lifetime. However, many men suffer from this illness as well. Irrespective of gender, depression most often appears in young adulthood, specifically in the late teens and early 20’s.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
