Migraine TMS Treatment in Southern California

TMS Therapy is a form of therapy that uses a portable magnetic device to send pulses through the scalp. With the single press of a button, a number of magnetic pulses can be sent through to the brain. This therapy can serve as a treatment for severe migraine headaches.

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we utilize this alternative treatment in order to offer new options for treating stubborn migraines. Our doctors are experienced with this type of therapy and have seen it increase quality of life and reduce the frequency of painful migraines for our patients.

At Neuro Wellness Center, we believe in the power of alternative treatment methods to cure human ailments and diseases, and using TMS to treat migraines is just one service option we provide.

WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

At our office, we show you exactly how the process works before your first session. When you make an appointment, you’ll see in person how TMS looks, and feels.

How Are Migraines Treated with TMS?

Migraines are more than just a headache. They are throbbing pains across the head, forehead and temple, coupled with severe sensory disturbances like light sensitivity and loss of vision. These episodes can even lead to hospitalization.

Migraines can be treated through a variety of different methods. Unfortunately, there is no cure yet. At Neuro Wellness Spa, we’ve seen for ourselves the healing power of TMS for migraine sufferers. Through this non-invasive method, individuals can reduce or fully eliminate their migraine patterns.

This non-drug option is a safe alternative treatment method for those in need of relief. All that we do is simply place the TMS device on the back of your head and press a button. Through this, mild electrical pulses stimulate the occipital cortex of the brain and calm overactive brain activity. With TMS, we can reduced or completely halt migraines once unnecessary brain activity is subdued.

Migraine Statistics

Migraines do not isolate individuals. In fact, it’s an issue that over 1 billion people suffer from worldwide. If you do not suffer from migraines yourself, you probably know someone who does.

Migraines are the 3rd most common illness in the entire world, which means someone in every four households suffers. Unfortunately, migraines tend to run in families. If you’re a migraine sufferer, there’s a 90% chance it came from your family history.

Most people don’t really understand just how incapacitating migraines can be. They made the list of most disabling illnesses in the world, in fact, at number 6.

Migraines often leave people in the hospital. Every 10 seconds, someone is visiting a U.S. emergency room complaining of a migraine attack. Most sufferers will experience the headaches a few times a month. However, more than 4 million will experience chronic daily migraines.

If you are someone that falls within these statistics, we can help treat your migraines with TMS at our center. Contact us today to learn more about our process.

Signs & Symptoms of Migraines

Migraines can affect anyone. They may vary in frequency or strength, depending on the individual. They are easy to tell apart from headaches due to their individualized symptoms.

Medical data has not yet been able to indicate a certain cause of migraines. Most migraines tend to be genetically related. However, people may have certain triggers that include lack of sleep or being in a stressful situation or environment.

Migraines can often cause the sufferer to see flashing lights, hear ringing noises, or feel a tingling sensation. They can make a person extremely sensitive to light and even nauseous. Knowing the symptoms in advance can help you recognize them when they arrive.

A few days before a migraine strikes, you may notice symptoms that include:

  • Lowered mood
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Decreased or increased appetite
  • Dehydration
  • Stiffness in the neck

Just before a migraine hits, you may experience the following symptoms for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour:

  • Loss of vision
  • Feeling of pins and needles
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Numbness or weakness on one side
  • Phantom sounds
  • Uncontrolled movements

When the migraine itself hits, it might feel like:

  • A severe pulsing or throbbing pain in the head
  • Focus on one side of the body or head
  • Pain for anywhere from 4 to 72 hours
  • Extreme sensitivity to light, sounds, smells, etc.
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision

After the headache subsides, you may feel the following:

  • Drained and exhausted
  • Moody
  • Confused
  • Sensitive

Is TMS Effective for Migraines?

TMS has proven to be effective in treating migraines. TMS has been approved for treating migraines by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). In a controlled study of 164 patients, those treated with TMS resulted in a 39 percent chance of having a painless moment after treatment lasting up to 48 hours. In another study, over three quarters of patients who were treated with TMS experienced reduced frequency of headaches.

How Long Does it Take for TMS to Start Working?

TMS can start working almost immediately. Researchers observed that patients treated with TMS can be pain-free within 2 hours after treatment. Some patients may find better results after repetitive TMS treatment. However, many have experienced a reduction in pain or complete relief after just one treatment.

Can TMS Exacerbate Migraine Symptoms?

With any treatment there is a risk of side effects. TMS is generally tolerated without side effects or with mild side effects. A few patients experienced mild headaches after treatment, but the majority experienced relief from severe migraines.

How Successful is TMS for Treating Migraines?

As noted above, studies have shown TMS treatment to be effective against migraines. Nearly half of those tested showed positive results in one study, while over three quarters found relief in another.

Why Use TMS to Treat Migraines?

TMS is a great treatment alternative for those who have tried other options to no avail. TMS does not require any drug involvement or invasive procedures. It’s a safe and effective option to try when nothing else has worked.

Are Other Therapies Recommended Alongside TMS Treatments for Migraines?

TMS therapy is often recommended by a headache specialist. The doctor may recommend concurrent treatment with medication or another method. Supplements, herbs, and alternative medicine are other alternative methods to consider. Doctors may also recommend TMS treatment alone. It all depends on the individual. It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new treatment regimen for migraines.

Neuro Wellness Spa offers many different types of therapies; however, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) has been the cornerstone treatment used for people suffering from depression, anxiety, and other treatable mental disorders at our office since 2009.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
