Migraine TMS Treatment in Southern California

TMS is noninvasive technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate neuronal activity in the brain. It gained FDA indication for the treatment of major depressive disorder in 2008. Since then, researchers have continued to explore the ways TMS may benefit other conditions. In August 2018, the FDA added an indication of TMS for the treatment of OCD. Recent evidence suggest TMS may also serve as an effective treatment for severe migraine headaches.

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we are excited to offer TMS treatment for those suffering with migraines.

WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

At our office, we show you exactly how the process works before your first session. When you make an appointment, you’ll see in person how TMS looks, and feels.

How Are Migraines Treated with TMS?

Migraines are often experienced as throbbing pains across the head, forehead and temple, coupled with severe sensory disturbances like light sensitivity and loss of vision. These episodes can even lead to hospitalization.

Although there is no cure for migraines, treatment options are available. At Neuro Wellness Spa, our patients with migraines have experienced the efficacy of TMS

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe and effective treatment that delivers magnetic pulses to the occipital cortex of the brain. These pulses reduce overactive brain activity that has been associated with migraines. TMS is non-invasive (does not require surgery), non-systemic (does not affect the entire body) and well-tolerated.

Migraine Statistics

Migraines affect over 1 billion people worldwide. Migraines are the 3rd most common illness in the entire world; someone in approximately every four households is a chronic migraine sufferer. Although the causes of migraines aren’t fully understood, genetics and environmental factors may both play a role. In the United States, 12% of adults suffer from migraines and 40% could benefit from preventative therapies.

Is TMS Effective for Migraines?

TMS has proven to be effective in treating migraines. TMS has been approved for treating migraines by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). In a controlled study of 164 patients, those treated with TMS resulted in a 39 percent chance of having a painless moment after treatment lasting up to 48 hours. In another study, over three quarters of patients who were treated with TMS experienced reduced frequency of headaches.

How Long Does it Take for TMS to Start Working?

TMS can start working almost immediately. Researchers observed that patients treated with TMS can be pain-free within 2 hours after treatment. Some patients may find better results after repetitive TMS treatment. However, many have experienced a reduction in pain or complete relief after just one treatment.

Can TMS Exacerbate Migraine Symptoms?

With any treatment there is a risk of side effects. TMS is generally tolerated without side effects or with mild side effects. A few patients experienced mild headaches after treatment, but the majority experienced relief from severe migraines.

How Successful is TMS for Treating Migraines?

As noted above, studies have shown TMS treatment to be effective against migraines. Nearly half of those tested showed positive results in one study, while over three quarters found relief in another.

Why Use TMS to Treat Migraines?

TMS is a great treatment alternative for those who have tried other options to no avail. TMS does not require any drug involvement or invasive procedures. It’s a safe and effective option to try when nothing else has worked.

Are Other Therapies Recommended Alongside TMS Treatments for Migraines?

TMS therapy is often recommended by a headache specialist. The doctor may recommend concurrent treatment with medication or another method. Supplements, herbs, and alternative medicine are other alternative methods to consider. Doctors may also recommend TMS treatment alone. It all depends on the individual. It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new treatment regimen for migraines.

Neuro Wellness Spa offers many different types of therapies; however, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) has been the cornerstone treatment used for people suffering from depression, anxiety, and other treatable mental disorders at our office since 2009.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
