MeRT Therapy in Southern California

Neuro Wellness Spa is a leader in personalized brain health and neuromodulation.  Using state of the art MeRT therapy, our clinicians deliver personalized treatments for a wide variety of brain related disorders and for optimizing cognitive performance. By combining sequential electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings, electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), MeRT analyzes brainwave data to deliver scientifically-driven treatments to each individual’s unique brain pattern for the best outcomes possible.

What is MeRT?

MeRT stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. MeRT therapy is a treatment that combines the technologies of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS, an FDA cleared therapy), qEEG and EKG to deliver treatments tailored for each individual’s unique brain pattern.

By measuring and analyzing your brainwave activity, MeRT assesses the communication quality between the neurons in your brain and custom designs treatment protocols to optimize brain function. Using neuroscience and machine learning, MeRT visibly reshapes brainwave activity and strengthens functionality to improve health outcomes.

How Does MeRT Work?

There are four simple stages in the MeRT process that result in treatments scientifically designed for each individual’s unique brain function:

Step 1: Record EEG

The MeRT treatment process begins with a resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (EKG) to measure brain wave frequencies, heart rate and brain-heart coherence.

Step 2: EEG Analysis and Review

Using a patented approach, we develop a customized TMS protocol that optimizes brain synchrony.

Step 3: Treatment

A TMS coil delivers magnetic pulses specifically targeted and individualized for each patient.

Step 4: Progress Evaluation

Every 10 treatments,  sequential EEG recordings document progress and guide scientifically informed treatment. A typical course involves patients coming Monday through Friday. Length of treatment course varies by the individual’s needs.

Non-Invasive

MeRT is non-invasive and well-tolerated.

FDA-Cleared

Our devices are safe and cleared by the FDA.

Drug-Free

MeRT is a drug-free approach that uses magnetic pulses to retrain the brain.

What is MeRT Used For?

PTSD

PTSD will manifest as the result of disruption in the front of the brain. It is common to see two competing alpha frequencies in the frontal lobe and slow rolling waveforms drowning out what should be a single strong alpha frequency. With MeRT, as the chaos of the brainwave activities subsides, an improvement in sleep, emotional stability, and overall sense of wellbeing is often realized.

Depression

Although medications and behavioral therapies are treatment options for depression, over 30% of patients experience depressive symptoms after undergoing these conventional treatments. Patients with depression have a few markers noted and reported in EEG studies. MeRT combines rTMS, an FDA-cleared treatment for depression, with qEEG and EKG recordings to identify asymmetries and strengthen brainwave activity with the goal of reducing symptoms of depression.

Anxiety

MeRT is a well-tolerated and highly effective approach to symptom relief for those with anxiety. Individuals with clinical anxiety tend to demonstrate a q-EEG with high beta activity and disruptive alpha activity. MeRT combines rTMS, an FDA-cleared treatment, with qEEG and EKG recordings to individualize treatments to each unique brain pattern.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) & Concussion

Concussion and repeated hits to the head can affect brain performance. MeRT identifies brain areas affected and targets those areas with an individualized treatment protocol. With MeRT, we can optimize brain performance so you can be at your best at home, at work or school, and on the field.

Sports Recovery

When it comes to sports recovery, top coaches and athletes understand that cognitive focus and function are as vital as physical fitness. Using sequential EEG recordings and individualized treatment protocols, we give athletes the comfort of knowing that their brain health is being as meticulously managed as the other aspects of their physical wellness. This not only facilitates recovery and ensures peak performance during their athletic career, but also protects brain health in the years after they hang up their cleats.

Peak Performance

Daily stressors including sleep deprivation, diet, substance use, stress and other factors may take away your cognitive edge. If this happens, we can help by identifying the areas of your brain that may be affected and target those areas with individualized treatment protocols. Typically, MeRT optimizes brain performance so you can be at your best at home, at work and at the gym.

Post Stroke

MeRT is a well-tolerated and highly effective treatment for post-stroke. MeRT combines rTMS, an FDA-cleared treatment, with qEEG and EKG recordings to tailor treatments to each individual’s unique brain pattern. The quality of communication between your neurons can be disrupted by many things, including a stroke. These disruptions can be minor or significant.

Insomnia

The quality of communication between your neurons can be disrupted by many things, including sleep disorders. Through the measurement and analysis of your brainwave activity, MeRT identifies disruptions to your brain network and builds treatment parameters specifically tailored to your needs. In most cases we can visibly reshape brainwave activity, regardless of what may have caused the disruption to begin with.

Migraine with Aura

MeRT is a well-tolerated and highly effective for migraine, particularly migraine with aura. MeRT combines rTMS, an FDA-cleared treatment, with qEEG and EKG recordings to individualize treatments to each unique brain pattern. Through the measurement and analysis of your brainwave activity, MeRT identifies disruptions to your brain network and builds treatment parameters.

ADHD

MeRT begins by mapping your brain activity and identifying areas that may not be communicating effectively. With personalized protocols, MeRT identifies and nurtures specific areas of the brain to improve synchronicity and strengthen functionality. By synchronizing the brain or neural activity communication, individuals with ADHD can experience improvement in attention and concentration, learning, reduced impulsivity and overall better quality of life.

Addiction

MeRT is a well-tolerated and highly effective treatment for addiction and substance abuse. Through the measurement and analysis of your brainwave activity, MeRT identifies disruptions to your brain network caused by addiction and builds treatment parameters specifically tailored to your needs. In most cases we can visibly reshape brainwave activity, regardless of what may have caused the disruption to begin with.

Alzheimer’s & Dementia

MeRT is a well-tolerated and highly effective approach to symptom relief for those with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia. Through the measurement and analysis of your brainwave activity, MeRT identifies disruptions to your brain network and builds treatment parameters scientifically designed to address your needs. In most cases, MeRT can visibly reshape brainwave activity, regardless of what may have caused the disruption.

Cognitive Decline

MeRT is a well-tolerated and highly effective approach to symptom relief for those with cognitive decline. Age-related changes in the structure and function of brain synapses and changes in neuronal networks correlate with cognitive changes with aging. A variety of factors can cause cumulative damage to the brain with age and produce cognitive impairments.

  • How is MeRT therapy different from rTMS?

Unlike standard rTMS therapy, the MeRT℠ approach individualizes the treatment frequency and location based on each patient’s Quantitative EEG and EKG. The resulting information is used to develop a personalized protocol for each patient, aimed at encouraging healthy brain communication. This can lead to significant clinical improvements.

  • What takes place during a typical MeRT session?

A typical MeRT treatment session lasts approximately 40 minutes. MeRT is an outpatient procedure after which patients may immediately return back to their daily life, including work and school. During treatment, patients recline in a private treatment room and can read, relax or watch television.

  • What are the side effects of MeRT therapy?

Overall, patients tolerate MeRT treatment very well. The most commonly reported side effect is a temporary, mild headache at the site of stimulation, which responds well to over-the-counter analgesics.
