WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) THERAPY?

TMS safely treats symptoms of anxiety and depression. It relies on the use of magnetic energy. This stimulates parts of the brain affected by mental health disorders.

It began as a treatment option for non-responsive depression. Since, it has grown to include other disorders as well. However, it remains a depression alternative treatment option for many people. The Neuro Wellness Spa is one of the top providers of TMS therapy.

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. Other treatments rely on deep brain stimulation or vagus nerve stimulation. Unlike those treatments, TMS does not require electrode implantation or surgery. It will not cause seizures or require the use of anesthesia sedation. In fact, TMS will not affect cognitive function. Patients can go about daily activities following treatment.

At our office, we show you exactly how the process works before your first session. When you make an appointment, you’ll see in person how TMS looks, and feels.

How is Bipolar Disorder Treated with TMS?

There is no cure for bipolar disorder, but its symptoms are treatable with TMS therapy. TMS uses magnetic pulses to target brain structures affected by bipolar disorder. Specifically, the prefrontal cortex of the brain is stimulated. This increases neuron activity and stabilizes mood. As a result, symptoms of bipolar disorder become controllable.

What to expect from one of our treatment sessions at Neuro Wellness Spa:

1. Your loved one and a trained specialist discuss their condition. The specialist determines how much magnetic energy is needed in the session.
2. An electromagnetic coil is then placed on their head. The specialist makes adjustments before the treatment begins.
3. Short, painless pulses are delivered to specific areas of the brain.

Throughout your treatment, a trained specialist monitors your loved one’s responses. Adjustments to signal strength are made as needed.

You or your loved one will remain fully alert during each session. They will sit and relax for each session’s 40-minute duration. They’re welcome to read, watch TV, or simply close their eyes.

Bipolar Disorder Statistics

Bipolar disorder is more common than you may think:

  • 5.7 million people in the U.S., or 2.6% of the American adult population, suffer from bipolar disorder.
  • It affects men and women equally.
  • Bipolar disorder is one of the top ten leading causes of disability in the world.
  • Bipolar disorder decreases the average expected lifespan by more than 9 years.
  • This condition doesn’t only affect adults. In a study by the National Health Institute, 1% of children aged 14 to 18 met the criteria for the condition.
  • Only a quarter of patients receive an accurate diagnosis within 3 years.

Bipolar disorder often goes misdiagnosed for years. In men, it is often mistaken for schizophrenia. Women tend to receive an incorrect diagnosis of depression.

Sometimes, patients can delay or refuse treatment due to the stigma that exists around the condition. Some believe intervention isn’t required.

Is TMS Effective for Bipolar Disorder?

Our team at Neuro Wellness Spa has experienced success with TMS treatment. Our patient selection method narrows our focus. It allows us to provide the most effective treatment possible. We only take on patients that we know will benefit from our treatment.

How Long Does it Take for TMS to Start Working?

Patients experience higher rates of success when they attend multiple sessions a week. It takes several weeks of treatment for symptoms to improve.

Can TMS Exacerbate Bipolar Disorder Symptoms?

In three studies, some patients experienced an increase in manic symptoms during TMS treatment. These figures weren’t statistically significant.

Regarding other side effects, occurrences of seizures and memory loss are listed as potential severe side effects of TMS, though they have never been observed here at NWS.

TMS It is possible that you or your loved one might experience some minor side effects after session. Some potential side effects of TMS therapy to be aware of are:

  • Headaches
  • Temporary hearing loss
  • Lightheadedness
  • Tingling in the scalp, jaw, or faces
  • Pain at the treatment site

Most of these symptoms go away after a treatment session is over. They can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

TMS’s side effects are rare and mild when they do occur. Hence, this therapy is a possible treatment option for those suffering from bipolar disorder. Get in touch with Neuro Wellness Spa to learn more about how we can help your loved one.

How Successful is TMS for Treating Bipolar Disorder?

Both placebo-controlled experiments and clinical trials show TMS to be effective in treating bipolar disorder. In a study by Brainsway, 70% of patients responded positively to TMS treatment.

However, TMS is not for all patients with bipolar disorder. This therapy is dangerous for patients who have metal or implanted devices. Patients with cochlear implants, brain stents, or other metal devices near their face and neck shouldn’t receive TMS therapy. For these patients, the magnetic coil used in TMS may cause harm and render its benefits obsolete.

Why Use TMS to Treat Bipolar Disorder?

TMS therapy is an effective treatment for bipolar disorder because the body tolerates it well. TMS is an outpatient procedure. You don’t have to be hospitalized or undergo anesthesia. You simply just have to show up to session.

Antidepressant medications are often used to treat bipolar disorder. They aren’t all effective for some patients, who have reported that certain medications cause:

  • Nausea
  • Changes in weight
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Cognitive impairment
  • More frequent or intense manic episodes

TMS therapy is a great treatment to consider alongside effective treatment from your doctor. TMS is often more effective when combined with medication. Each patient experiences symptoms differently. Neuro Wellness Spa finds the treatment plan that’s right for your loved one.

Neuro Wellness Spa offers many different types of therapies; however, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) has been the cornerstone treatment used for people suffering from depression, anxiety, and other treatable mental disorders at our office since 2009.

HOW DOES TMS THERAPY FEEL?

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we use a TMS device produced by MagVenture, which is a medical device company specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems. Once the coil is placed on your head, the TMS technician will then begin your treatment protocol. Treatments for depression are typically placed on the left side of your head, while treatments for anxiety are placed on the right. When the treatment starts, you will hear a series of clicks with each pulse while you feel a tapping sensation under the coil. The tapping sensation should not be painful, and your TMS technician will make sure that you remain as comfortable as possible during your treatment. Once your session is finished, you may experience a slight headache or some residual feeling from the tapping during your first few sessions, but any side effects from TMS are highly unlikely. After TMS treatment, you are free to continue with your day as usual.
