What is the difference between counseling and psychiatry?
Psychiatry is a medical field where psychiatrists diagnose, treat, and help prevent mental illnesses using medical assessments, medications, and other interventions. They are medical doctors who can prescribe medication. Counseling focuses on providing guidance and support to resolve personal, social, or psychological challenges through talk therapy. Counselors are not medical doctors and typically do not prescribe medications. Learn more about the differences between a therapist and a psychiatrist.
