Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, & TMS Therapy for Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

If you’re struggling with OCD, Neuro Wellness Spa is here to support you. Our team of experienced psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, TMS technicians, and therapists is dedicated to providing you with the tools and resources necessary to manage your OCD symptoms and lead a fulfilling life.

How we can help treat your OCD

OCD affects approximately 1 in 100 adults (around 2 to 3 million adults in the U.S.). It typically begins to manifest either during early adolescence (ages 10 to 12) or later in the teenage years and into adulthood. While there is no cure for OCD, effective management strategies exist.

At Neuro Wellness Spa, we collaborate with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and challenges. Our psychiatrists, therapists, and other mental health professionals provide a comprehensive set of options to help you manage your OCD.

Medication management for OCD

Antidepressants such as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are the primary medications prescribed for treating OCD. Common SSRIs used in OCD treatment include Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Luvox, and Zoloft. At Neuro Wellness Spa, our psychiatrists collaborate closely with you to identify the most effective medication tailored to manage your OCD symptoms optimally.

Talk therapy for OCD

  • Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is widely recognized as the leading therapy for treating OCD. ERP, a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), focuses on confronting the thoughts, images, objects, and situations that trigger obsessions (the “exposure”). The “response prevention” aspect involves learning from a therapist to refrain from engaging in compulsive behaviors once triggered.

Your therapist will collaborate closely with you to identify your specific triggers and develop flexible, healthy coping strategies to help you resist compulsions. Our team of master’s-level clinicians specializes in guiding individuals with OCD to better recognize and effectively manage these triggers.

TMS therapy for OCD

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-approved option for managing OCD, as a stand-alone treatment, or complementing medication and therapy. TMS is a highly effective treatment option for OCD, with one in three patients experiencing reduced symptoms and sustained benefits, especially those with treatment-resistant OCD. We can collaborate with you to assess whether TMS therapy for OCD is the best fit for your unique needs.

Residential & outpatient programs for OCD

Our inpatient and outpatient programs through our partners at Clear Behavioral Health provide a focused and in-depth environment for treating your OCD. We can help you determine if the residentialin-person, or virtual outpatient (PHP and IOP) programs are a good fit.

What is OCD?

OCD is a mental illness that causes obsessions, which can look like unwanted thoughts or urges, and/or compulsions, which involve doing actions repeatedly. OCD can look like or be mistaken for anxiety, but we can make sure you get the proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Signs of OCD

Some of the common symptoms of OCD include:

Obsessions

Obsessions are intrusive and unwanted recurrent thoughts and images. Examples include:

  • Worries about yourself or others getting hurt.
  • Constant awareness of blinking and breathing.
  • Fear of germs.
  • Upsetting thoughts related to sex, religion, and violence.
  • Need for things to be symmetrical and orderly.

Compulsions

Compulsions are physical and mental acts that you feel you have to do even if you don’t want to. You may feel that by doing them, you will stop the unwanted thoughts or keep something bad from happening. These behaviors can lead to complex rituals. Examples include:

  • Doing tasks in a specific order every time, or needing to restart if you mess up.
  • Needing to count things and assigning special significance to certain numbers.
  • Washing and cleaning rituals.
  • Arranging items in a particular order.
  • Checking and rechecking things like whether a door is closed or you’ve turned off the oven.
  • Repeating certain words.
  • Constantly seeking reassurance.
