TMS Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder in Los Angeles, CA

What is TMS therapy?

The brain is composed of over 100 billion neurons. The quality of behavior between your neurons can be disrupted by many things. If you, or a loved one suffers from BPD Los Angeles is home to Neuro Wellness Spa TMS therapy centers. TMS can treat specific areas of the brain that may not be communicating effectively in people with borderline personality disorder.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is non-invasive, medication free procedure that can be used to help treat borderline personality disorder. TMS is a safe and effective treatment that delivers magnetic pulses to stimulate different areas of the brain. TMS is non-invasive (does not require surgery), non-systemic (does not affect the entire body) and well-tolerated. TMS therapy can be used alone, or in conjunction with other treatment modalities including behavioral therapies and medication.

During treatment, patients relax in a treatment chair and remain awake and alert. Many like to read or take advantage of the other mental health services we offer at Neuro Wellness Spa.

How does TMS therapy work?

TMS is both non-invasive and non-systemic. It has fewer side effects than other treatments. In some cases, no side effects at all. With more than 10,000 treatments performed in clinical trials, the most common side effect was mild-moderate scalp discomfort. Unlike medications, which affect the entire body as they pass through the blood-brain barrier, TMS therapy targets depression at the source. That means TMS does not have drug-related side effects like weight gain, sexual dysfunction or emotional flatness.

During TMS treatment, patients recline in a private treatment room and may relax, read, work, or watch television during treatment. A TMS magnet is positioned over the patient’s head to deliver gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain responsible for borderline personality disorder. Each treatment sessions lasts about 30 minutes, after which patients can get back to their days right away, including work or school.

TMS safely treats symptoms of borderline personality disorder. It uses gentle magnetic pulses to nurture specific areas of the brain. For the better part of medical history, the world has focused on chemical aspects of the brain with medications. TMS takes a different approach by targeting neurons–brain cells that communicate with each other in circuits using neurotransmitters.

For those diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, specific neurocircuitry, or areas of the brain are known to function differently. With the use of gentle magnetic pulses, TMS stimulates these areas of the brain to improve the brain’s ability to regulate mood.

How is borderline personality disorder treated with TMS?

For borderline personality disorder (BPD), TMS is a supplemental treatment that is meant to be used in combination with other therapies. It is not meant to replace medications or therapy. When added to existing treatment regimens, TMS has been shown to greatly decrease BPD symptoms.

A 2017 clinical trial of TMS for the treatment of BPD reported a decrease in self injurious and suicidal behavior among BPD patients. Patients in this study also experienced improved social functioning and better interpersonal relationships. Using TMS to treat BPD might also result in other clinical benefits including improved mood and reduced depressive symptoms.

TMS therapy usually consists of 36 treatment sessions spread over three months. Each session usually lasts about 20-30 minutes. During TMS treatment, patients recline in a treatment chair and remain awake and alert. A TMS magnet is positioned over the patient’s head to deliver pulses to specific areas of the brain. Patients report that the pulses feel like taps on the scalp. After each treatment session. patients can immediately return back to their daily routines.

TMS is well tolerated. Sometimes patients experience mild scalp discomfort or mild headache during treatment. Most patients experience noticeable improvement after 2 weeks of TMS treatment (8-10 sessions)

  • Intense fear of abandonment
  • Rapid changes of self-identity

It is not uncommon for BPD patients to also experience severe depression and anxiety.
