What is the difference between counseling and psychiatry?
Psychiatry is a medical field where psychiatrists diagnose, treat, and help prevent mental illnesses using medical assessments, medications, and other interventions. While psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and view mental health concerns through a biological lens, counselors focus on providing specialized support to resolve personal, social, or psychological challenges through talk therapy and guidance sessions. Counselors are not medical doctors and typically do not prescribe medications. Learn more about the differences between a therapist and a psychiatrist.
